12/10/2011 - 2011 Lotus Cup Europe Season Review

Dijon Prenois

The third season of Lotus Cup Europe under the organizational skills of LoTRDC saw an important change. With Dany Bahar's revitalised Lotus putting ever greater emphasis on racing, overseen by the experienced Claudio Berro, the Lotus Cup programme expanded throughout the globe. The series now sat alongside a number of other Lotus Cup series including those from the USA, Japan and UK.

The increased opportunities for the European Lotus racer changed the makeup of the grid, focusing it more on the French, Belgian and German drivers, and whilst British drivers still entered the races, the balance was now firmly in favour of those from the mainland. Despite this, grid numbers were higher than ever, with the 2-Eleven and Exige Cup classes experiencing huge growth. The Production class, which had provided up to a third of the field in the past, was now a sideshow to the main event but no less competitive for it.

A new class was also added for the V6-powered Evora GT4 race cars. 2010's outstanding driver, Gregory Rasse, was joined by Thierry Verheist and whilst the former's season started well with a podium at Dijon, he was unable to extract as much from the car as he had from his Exige. Verheist was as solid as ever and so it wasn't until the final round, with Lotus Motorsport ace Gavan Kershaw on board that the first Evora victory was claimed. With the top classes as equal as ever, drivers still had to make up the extra tenths to win races.

Even so, as with previous years, the majority of the wins came from the 2-Eleven class. In 2010, Bourcier Competition provided one of the stars of the season with Romain Ratureau. This year they had a new driver but despite an appearance somewhat less youthful than their previous winner, Rémi Pochauvin came with plenty of experience, including the Le Mans 24 Hours. He was no slouch either, and dominated the first two rounds at Dijon-Prenois and Magny-Cours.

J Rasse, R Pochauvin

It seemed as though he couldn't be beaten early in the season but missing from those early grids was regular Jon Walker, with a variety of mechanical maladies. However he and the car were back on form at the Nürburgring, taking a brace of victories. Meanwhile although Pochauvin didn't take the top step of the podium again he was usually to be found at the sharp end of the field and established himself as the one to beat.

The series joined forces with Lotus Cup UK at two rounds and since they were both at circuits familiar to the British contingent, it was no surprise that they dominated. Finishing second to Kershaw at Spa, Mark Fullalove took the Brands Hatch wins, with Steve Williams and Walker the challengers.

Christophe Lisandre upheld mainland honour at Brands Hatch and he could be relied upon to challenge in all the races. Unable to add to his 2010 Magny-Cours win, he came very close at the same circuit, even led, but could not resist Pochauvin. He found himself amongst a strong 2-Eleven contingent this year, with Phillippe Loup and Karl Vivion providing particularly tough competition. Jean-Pierre Genoud Prachex and British drivers Pete Storey and Simon Deacon also challenged on occasion in a very competitive class.

Whilst the Exige Cup class rivalled the 2-Elevens for numbers, one man stood above the rest in the races. With his brother having moved to the Evora category, John Rasse took almost every class win and sealed his season with an overall win at Zolder, a feat that Gregory had come very close to achieving the previous year. Awarded the best driver of the season overall, John's challengers ended up squabbling between themselves – Olivier Cunat was the only other victor, benefitting from John running wide at turn one in race two at Magny-Cours, whilst Jean-Baptiste Meusnier, Gregor Zetsche and Herbert Metzker joined him as best of the rest.

Zolder

The Open Class was often fought out between veteran David Harvey, Xavier Georges in an immaculate Gulf-liveried series 1 Exige, and father-and-son pairing David and Rob Fenn. Harvey suffered a few problems and was unlucky not to score a class win, whilst Georges picked up a number of wins along the way. However it was the Fenns that were the frontrunners, in a superbly-liveried motorsport Elise but their season only lasted until Brands Hatch, so Georges had to share the honours with Campbell Cassidy and Matt Cherrington's Europa at the final Spa round.

Whilst not in the hunt for overall victories, the Production class provided plenty of entertainment as José Vaslin and Nigel Ayres usually fought it out for victory, the pair being joined by Elise racing returnee Paul Pattison part-way through the season. They were joined by occasional visitors from the UK's Elise Trophy and so the winners' roster featured many names, including Matt Bartlett (Magny-Cours), Adam Bewsey and Dan Plant (Nürburgring), Steve Quick and Ken Savage (Brands Hatch) and Ben Hyland (Spa-Francorchamps). The class also saw two new regular runners, Alain Adoud and Jan Christe, who fielded the first 2010-facelift Elise racer.

The 2011 season has provided many new faces, some of them visiting the podium, as the series establishes itself as a popular proving ground on the race circuits of western Europe. More of the same is expected next year as the Lotus brand continues to go from strength to strength.

20/09/2011 - Zolder Race Report

Lotus Cup Europe returned to the Belgian circuit of Zolder after a successful supporting role to the FIA European Truck Grand Prix last year. The former home of the Belgian Grand Prix is a popular track amongst Lotus drivers and forms the first part of a double-header in the country to round off the 2011 season.

Jon Walker, the winner of race two here last year returns as favourite but faces strong competition from Rmi Pochauvin, who dominated the early French races, and Christophe Lisandre, who has yet to record a win this year. Gregory Rasse almost won at this circuit in 2010 and will want to be the first Evora victor, and his brother, who missed that race, will also be keen to perform well.

25/07/2011 - Brands Hatch GP Race Report

Supporting the FIA Formula Two Championship once more, both Lotus Cup series joined forces for a 'best of Europe' contest, also counting as a points scoring round for Lotus Cup UK. Twenty and thirty-minute races followed Lotus Cup Europe's format.

The Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit is a firm favourite amongst many of the drivers and its challenging nature has historically handed the advantage to the UK-based drivers. However last year Romain Rautureau dominated on his first visit, so could the similarly impressive Remi Pochauvin be the man to beat? Steve Williams picked up the pieces when Rautureau's car failed in race two last time and has otherwise been the fastest man here, however John Walker is likely to be strong, as is Mark Fullalove.

04/07/2011 - Nürburgring Race Report

Following an extended stay in France, the series returned to the legendary Nurburgring circuit, set in the picturesque Eifel mountains, for round three.

Remi Pochauvin is the man to beat in 2011, with a clean sweep of victories so far, however with all of them taking place in his home country, would his dominance end here? Jon Walker won at this circuit last year and has hopes of lasting the distance this time round, whilst the Rasse brothers intend to improve upon their early season results, as does Christophe Lisandre. David and Rob Fenn aim to continue their form in the Open class, whilst Adam Bewsey and Dan Plant join in with Production regulars Nigel Ayres and Jose Vaslin.

01/05/2011 - Dijon Prenois Race Report

06/04/2011 - Lotus Cup Europe kicks off in style at Dijon

Lotus Cup Europe at Dijon in 2009

Deacon takes win in the opening Cup UK round

An all French Podium last time out on French soil

The Lotus Cup Europe 2011 season gets started at Dijon-Prenois later this month (30 April – 1 May), returning to the picturesque former home of the French and Swiss Grands Prix after a year’s absence at a circuit that is universally popular with Lotus drivers with its sweeping turns and elevation changes.

Sharing the bill at the Trophée de Bourgogne are the Belgian Touring Cars and Fun Cup for what should be a hugely entertaining meeting.

The 2-Eleven class looks like being the most popular in 2011 with Christophe Lisandre aiming to hold onto his crown but with over twenty cars entered this year his job will be a difficult one. Although Philippe Loup will be missing at Dijon there’s no shortage of French drivers looking to run Christophe close for victory on their home soil with Laurent Feve and Jean Pierre Genoud Prachex returning from last season, whilst Karl Vivion joins them from the Exige Class. Amongst the UK drivers crossing the channel, Nicholas Walker joins his brother Jon, adding a sibling rivalry to match the Rasses. Simon Deacon has already been a winner this year in the opening round of Lotus Cup UK, whilst Steve Williams, Pete Storey and Tom Chatterway will all look to add to their trophy cabinets. We also welcome a number of new drivers who will no doubt be looking to impress in what is arguably the most competitive single make class in any European wide series; Thierry Humbert, Sven Pettersson and Olivier Severini are among that number.

After last year’s exploits on the overall podium by eventual driver of the season Gregory Rasse, the Exige Class will be looking for another star this season. The obvious place to look to is Greg’s brother John but Olivier Cunat is sure to provide stiff competition yet again, as will last year’s newcomers Gregor Zetsche, Glenn Sherwood and Jean Baptiste Meusnier, who both impressed when they joined the series late in the season. Herbert Metzker and Christophe Guerrier will be expected to take trophies this year and we’ve a number of dark horses coming in during the season, with Thierry Hedoin and Rémi Pochauvin both joining Cup Europe on home soil at Dijon for the first time.

New for 2011 is the Evora class, with GT4-spec racers entered for Gregory Rasse and Thierry Verheist and the former will certainly be looking to build upon the sort of performances that earned him that driver of the season accolade in 2010.

The Open Class includes a Europa for French-based driver Campbell Cassidy, whilst experienced racers David and Rob Fenn can be expected to challenge for outright honours in their beautifully prepared Motorsport Elise.

Finally, the production class will be wide open this year with Jose Vaslin expected to improve upon a hugely impressive opening season. Nigel Ayres will be aiming to provide the main challenge whilst Stephane Merlet, Jan Christe and Alan Adoud add welcome variety to a class which is starting to take off outside the UK with cars available from just 11,000 Euros it’s an ideal entry level into racing. The class will also see guest appearances during the season from Ex-Lotus F1 driver and Group Lotus Ambassador Martin Donnelly, who will also be on hand at most weekends giving free coaching to drivers out racing for the first time.

It all adds to a record grid for an exciting opening Lotus Cup Europe round. We hope to welcome many spectators and hope that you can join us for a Lotus drivers and fans barbeque on Saturday evening at the circuit.

10/02/2011 - Television Coverage Extended

New Programme to Expand on Lotus Content

LoTRDC have confirmed that Motors TV will continue to provide coverage of their races in 2011, which have given them a strong profile in European motorsport over the last four years. The format has been tweaked to include coverage of the new Lotus Cup UK Championship in addition to the Elise Trophy and Lotus Cup Europe and will also add features on Lotus in Motorsport, an area that has experienced huge growth in the past 12 months, providing a real buzz within the sport.

With the additional content the one-hour shows, filmed and produced once again by Race TV, will be presented in a magazine format, broadening their appeal. The programmes will be broadcast throughout Europe, including the UK, France, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands - countries playing host to LoTRDC races in 2011.

Frederic Viger, Motors TV’s Head of Programming and Acquisitions said: “Everyone at Motors TV is delighted that Lotus Racing will be featured in our programming again in 2011. The fact that it is one of the few race series in the world supported by Lotus Cars highlights its prestige and, in addition to the on-track action, we’re planning some behind-the-scenes features and footage from the US scene this year, which will certainly add to the popularity of the shows amongst our viewers.”

Paul Golding of LoTRDC said: "Motors TV coverage has been a hit with the drivers and supporters of the series and with Lotus' drive towards a greater presence in motorsport, the new format is the perfect opportunity to gain an insight into the marque's activites"

26/10/2010 - Rapport de course pour Assen

Steve Williams stamped his authority over the Assen circuit from the first Practice session this weekend, at the final rounds of the Lotus Cup Europe season.  However a spin in the filthy conditions of race one relieved him of the lead, damaging the splitter on his 2-Eleven, which resulted in an eventual retirement.  This left flying Dutchman Marc Schipper to dominate in the rain, with John and Gregory Rasse making it an all-Exige podium, whilst the highest placed 2-Eleven of Christophe Lisandre was only sixth.

With a drying surface the following day, Williams reasserted his authority, despite early challenges from Schipper and Lisandre.  He was followed by another podium appearance from the Rasse brothers, who had once again fought their way up from relatively low grid positions, John once again prevailing.

On a weekend when driving ability counted for more than the machinery at their disposal, the Production class leaders also finished well in the overall order.  Both Gavin Kirby and Markus Nikowitsch were in the top ten, the former's seventh place following a subdued qualifying performance behind Nikowitsch and James Knight.  The Invitation class honours were shared between Cai Cederholm and David Harvey.

14/09/2010 - Rapport de course pour Zolder

Mark Fullalove and Jon Walker both enjoyed fruitful visits to Belgium’s Zolder circuit this weekend, taking a win each in torrential conditions as the Lotus Cup Europe series supported the FIA European Truck Championship.  Walker qualified his 2-Eleven on the front row on a much drier track and from each rolling start took early leads.  However conditions got the better of him in the first race as Fullalove tracked him down from ninth on the grid.  Walker then had the leading Exige of Gregory Rasse to contend with, losing out again by just two seconds.

In the next race, Walker held off Fullalove for the duration of the 30-minuter, his margin just over a second.  Poleman Christophe Lisandre completed the race in third place, with Rasse scoring another class win just behind.

Gavin Kirby was favourite for honours in the Production class but a spin early on took himself and Exige runner Olivier Cunat out of the race.  So it was left to James Knight and Michael Edwards to dispute victory – Knight won the first encounter, lapping amongst the faster machinery with Edwards third behind newcomer Ben Gower, whilst spins from both eventually gave the nod to Edwards later on.  The Invitation class trophies went to David Harvey and Cai Cederholm.

03/08/2010 - Round 4 – Brands Hatch GP

Gearbox troubles came between Romain Rautureau and a spectacular double at the Brands Hatch GP circuit, where Lotus Cup Europe supported Superleague Formula this weekend. The Frenchman, who also scored at Magny-Cours recently, started both races from pole position but a poor start in race one led to an over-optimistic move around the outside of Steve Williams at Paddock Hill after an early safety car intervention. Skipping through the gravel and rejoining well down the order, he then picked off every opponent before chasing after Williams, who was up to this point enjoying a healthy lead.

The pair ran two abreast for much of the GP section of the circuit before Rautureau asserted his authority. However Williams was able to stay with the leader through traffic and pulled off a fine move at Paddock Hill on the final tour, only for Rautureau to repeat his earlier challenge and cross the line first.

Second time around it looked to be a walkover for Rautureau, especially with a rolling start to ease his passage. However within a few laps he was falling down the order and eventually retired from the race, leaving Williams to win as he pleased, his third victory in a fortnight after dominating the Elise Trophy WTCC support rounds. Christophe Lisandre and Simon Deacon also posted fine performances, the latter picking up a brace of third places.

The Exige class was once again hotly contested by the Rasse brothers. John held a useful gap on the first occasion but much faster qualifier Gregory got his revenge later as the pair tussled throughout the 20-minute encounter. They both finished well ahead of Olivier Aggery.

Production was a double victory for Marcus Jewell, who was nearly upstaged by newcomer Stuart Plotnek. Steve Quick got between the pair in race two, with James Proctor the other podium finisher in the earlier event. Honours in the Invitation class went to BJ Chong on both occasions.

Following on from the full grid of 44 Lotus at Brands Hatch we have yet another full grid at Zandvoort with 33 cars entered for what is a maximum grid of just 30 cars due to noise restrictions. HARC who organise the State of Art Historische Zandvoort Trophy meeting have given permission for a maximum of 5 extra cars to start. Local Lotus main dealer Van der Kooi Sportscars are supporting the event and have arranged for a separate parking area inside the paddock for 50 Lotus owners. Ex-F1 World Champion Alan Jones was hugely impressed by the number of Lotus in the car parks at Brands so support should be strong again at Zandvoort. We also see a record number of entries in both the LCE 211 and Exige classes.
Spectator entry is available on the day with free practice, qually and race 1 taking part on Saturday and race 2 on Sunday lunch time.

Jon Walker took the other win on a weekend when local knowledge gave a huge advantage. David Seear was the leading Exige with John Rasse pressing him hard and taking 2nd in all 3 of the Exige races. Frenchman Christophe Lisandre was the pic of the non Brits in the 211 class with two thirds and a well deserved 2nd.

Former F1 World Champion Alan Jones MBE presented trophies on the podium, while World Land Speed record holder Wing Commander Andy Green met drivers in the paddock. Emmerson Fittipaldi, Alan Prost and a number of recent F1 drivers were present in the paddock and around Brands Hatch.
